I raved about Sing Anyway over on my Twitter account right after I finished the book and thought I should also write down my thoughts here on the blog as well. Gosh, what can I say about this book? It’s one of the most precious and heartwarming stories I’ve had the pleasure of reading in 2021.LET ME TELL YOU HOW I FELTI almost couldn’t believe that this was a novella because Anita Kelly does a fabulous job at fleshing out these characters. By the end, they felt like good old friends I’ve known for a long time and it almost made me sad that they weren’t real. When I think about Sing Anyway and my experience reading this charming little novella, I think about how much of an immersive experience it was. I was able to get lost in these characters and their lives so easily. And I really really needed that.So what’s the premise?KARAOKE, EYE-BANGING, AND ONE-NIGHT-STANDSSam and Lily frequent this karaoke cafe, The Moonlight Cafe, with their respective friend groups. On this particular day that they interact, Sam’s friend’s plans fall through, and they are left behind alone at the cafe. Lily is also there with her own friends and she happens to lock eyes with Sam and well, there’s some eye-banging (PHEW) that goes on that eventually leads to a passionate night of some real banging one-night stand.TWO AWKWARDLY ADORABLE CHARACTERSWhen I tell you that I loved these characters, it’s quite possibly an understatement. Y’all. These characters. I wanted to carry them around in my pocket. Sam, is a nerdy history professor, who is a little shy and quiet. They come alive around Lily and when they are more comfortable. It’s quite possibly the most adorable thing watching them full-on nerd-out about history and trains and just be themselves, you know?Lily is an equally darling character. She works as a receptionist but has big dreams of designing clothes. Like Sam, Lily is also a little shy, but when she’s on stage, singing her heart out, she absolutely steals the show. I think what really drew me to these characters is how gentle and kind they were. Even the secondary characters, Lily and Sam’s friends, are so lovely and delightful in their ways. I especially liked how open and welcoming everyone in Lily’s friend group was towards Sam.A PERFECT SOFT ROMANCETo me, Sam and Lily completely made sense as a couple. Their chemistry together was palpable, but it was the intensity of their emotional connection and their comfort levels around each other that sealed the deal for me. The romance in Sing Anyway wound up being so tender and loving. Yes, it starts off as a steamy (UMM HELLO) one-night-stand that neither thinks will go beyond the night, but they somehow find themselves in each other’s hearts over that one night. My own heart was SO SO FULL by the end of the book.I mentioned Lily and her dreams of designing clothes earlier and I want to quickly mention one of my favorite scenes in the book when Lily makes clothes for Sam because she knows that they are uncomfortable in their wardrobe. It’s like her own love language and it made for a very swoony and romantic scene. To be quite honest, I was jealous of Sam because Lily’s sense of style and her understanding of others’ sense of style was on point.WHAT ARE YOU STILL WAITING FOR? GO BUY IT RIGHT NOW!Anyways, I’ve rambled enough now, but I hope I’ve convinced you to give Sing Anyway a try. It’s the sort of unapologetically queer, romantic, and tender romance novellas that everyone deserves in their lives.
