I rarely like to read synopsis of books. One loses the feeling/tone of the narrative which is something I find enjoyable about reading. This “Summary and Analysis” of Robert Kolker’s Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family, was no different for me. With that said, Kolker’s work is so impressive and important, I hope this succinct overview of the book will help people learn about this most amazing family, a complex family that has not only struggled immensely with schizophrenia, but has contributed to our understanding of what it is, how to treat it, and even how to prevent it. You won’t get the emotional feel for the story from this summary, but you will understand a great deal more about schizophrenia and the toll it takes on families and societies, and the humanity that, nonetheless, shines through it all. If you don’t have time for the actual book, read this instead. It’s true to its intent and is well done.
