I'd rate this book 4.5 stars. It was a great read with a bit more meat to it than Shadows (Book 5 - which I also enjoyed). As the tension builds between Keenan and Khloe, with neither of them willing to take the next step and actually go on a date, a serious threat to Jolene's lair and Khloe's life gives them both a bit of kick in the you-know-what. Quick note: if you haven't read the previous books in this series, you can probably still get away with reading Book 6 as a standalone but I wouldn't recommend it as even though key elements pertaining to the supernatural and key characters are brushed over again, you'll still hit the ground running. There's a nice inclusion of the other characters from this series that loyal readers will appreciate (Knox, Harper, Asher, etc.).Khloe's abilities are brought to the forefront as she's called in to use her strong electrical pulses to break the shield of a lair demon who's able to harness death essence to raise the dead, having already done so to reanimate his decomposing daughter's body. When he hits her with a orb, she's unwittingly inflicted with a life-threatening illness. As for Knox's lair, a former lover and ghost from Keenan's past reappears with her son on the run from her former Prime, adding further complications. As per usual with this author, a lot of the plot was a bit far reaching and unrealistic at times, but I found it a bit more toned down in this book than some of her others and therefore enjoyed the story more.As a big fan of this series, there was a lot to like about this book. Given Khloe's character in the other books was ridiculously over the top and she seemed to be chucked in so the author could add humour (often too silly to actually be funny, may I add), I wasn't sure if I'd like this book with her being the main character, but I'm happy to say her 'quirkiness' wasn't laid on too thickly, thank goodness, making for a much more enjoyable read. Yeah, there were the random, stupid comments but I honestly thought they would be far more pertinent. I found Keenan's character changed a bit to suit the narrative and style that this author always slides towards, namely that overnight he came a big, bad, dangerous demon with a shocking temper - certainly not the impression that was given in previous books. We get to learn more about Khloe and Keenan's past and as per usual with this author, there's the random tragic past for the main characters that made me roll my eyes regarding the build up and eventual let down when it's either ridiculous or a non-event. They weren't harped on about too much, which was good, but Khloe said her maternal line's relationships were cursed and her mother was an alcoholic and Keenan's damage was his early years at the orphanage and the death of his parents (the latter which wasn't as detailed and capitalised on as much as I would have expected from Wright).Fans of the jealous and possessive type will love this book as Keenan oozed it, adding some over the top drama to the story line. There was also the usual giving in to feelings from the Hero - he just couldn't fight his feelings anymore, he wanted her too much, etc. Some of the character quirks brought up in previous books surprisingly weren't in this one. There was no mention of Keenan hating photos and Khloe riding him about it, nor did Keenan's additional powers show themselves.Within a few pages, Keenan's other woman drama was brought up. Considering it was still Chapter One, this was pretty quick, especially for this author who excells in raising, dragging out and beating to death other woman drama. I may be being a little harsh here as I hate the other woman trope in my stories, but it wasn't outrageous here for most of the book. Suzanne Wright certainly follows a pattern, however, if you haven't noticed from my comments or reading her other books, so a lot of her books' content can be similar and therefore elements of the novel becomes stale as if you've read it before...because you basically have. Her writing style also follows the same pattern as her many other books. The reader is saddled with wading through a heap of adjectives and similies forced into short sentences or a string of commas to emphasise scenes, particularly the steamier ones. If you've read any of her books before you'll probably know what I'm on about. The bit where if you took a shot every time the words wet or tight were brought up, you'd be dead well before the end of the book. Don't add any adjectives such as pumping, grinding, teasing, etc. and needing to finish the act to that list otherwise you'll deadline heaps earlier. There was a new one though - roasting - which made me laugh out loud. That's different. Maybe next time instead of getting down to business, Keenan should bring a whole chicken and have a barbeque. Khloe sobbing and needing to finish dirty deeds and then getting branded was also really similar to Knox and Harper. There were also the hilariously obvious dialogues between the male and female friendship groups where the guys, who are supposed to be these hard alphas, all of a sudden have these heart to hearts with the main character as some kind of segue to spell out plot points or characters feelings to the reader who is apparently borderline stupid and not able to join the dots themselves. Knox and his posse sitting around discussing feelings is hilarious to me. They don't trust or get close to anyone but are also only apparently one cup of tea away from establishing a therapy session.Okay, so I might have some pent up aggression about this author being talented but always following the exact same pattern in her books. I've seen her make statements about how her characters speak to her. This must drive her crazy since they must all be saying pretty much the exact same thing every time lolololol. Luckily, this book still stood up and was an enjoyable read for me. One of my favourite parts of this book was the further development between Raini and Maddox, the anchor she found in Shadows. I wanted more of this and even though his storyline in this books was super predictable, I still ate it up and can't wait until they get their own book because I was sniffing up their bits in this book like crack.Anyway, even though the story was predictable and the author fell into familiar patterns, I actually really liked this book. I hammered on about the familiar content and style above, but there was enough of a different spin on the demon world to keep it entertaining instead of frustrating and I'm looking forward to the next book whenever it eventually comes out. Keenan had an issue with Knox that was either forgotten about or dropped on purpose and there was quite a bit of Asher scattered throughout this book which looks promising. Maybe this is being done to set up a future series on the younger generation as Heidi always crops up, too. Anywho, bring on Raini and Maddox as the latter has the potential to become a new book boyfriend.
